Down the rabbit hole

Currently packing out the Wharf 1 theatre at Sydney Theatre Company, the Brendon Cowell-directed Australian premiere of Rabbit by British playwright Nina Raine stars the much-lauded Toby Schmitz (pictured), Kate Mulvany and Alison Bell.

“It’s talking about the big stuff, as all good plays do – love, death, sex,” Schmitz tells SX. “Nina Raine is very clever and cool in the sense that she captures how mates actually react. It has this slight illusion of people just banging on in a bar about who’s fucked who, but it’s actually a very well-crafted play.”

Indeed Rabbit garnered Raine the Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle awards for ‘Most Promising Playwright’. It premiered at the Old Red Lion Theatre in London in 2006 and transferred to the West End in the same year. A New York run followed.

Says Schmitz: “It really does sound like how real people speak, which is very cool for an audience.”

Rabbit by Nina Raine, Wharf 1 theatre, Sydney Theatre Company (Pier 4, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay) until January 18. Tickets $77/$62 concession from sydneytheatre.com.au or call 9250 1777.

Thanks to our friends at Sydney Theatre Company, SX has one double pass to Rabbit to give away for the performance on December 26 at 8pm. For your chance to win, go to Evolution Online (eevolution.com.au), go to the SX site (sxnews.e-p.net.au) and click on ‘Competitions and Giveaways’ under the ‘Menu’ link.
