Electrifying run

agendabilly-250.jpgIn less than five weeks, Billy Elliot, one of the most beloved musicals Sydney has ever seen, will draw its curtain to a close. And by the time it wraps up, it will be the third musical in the last 10 years to reach a one-year run (the others being The Lion King and MAMMA MIA!). An amazing feat, especially in today’s crowded musical theatre market. Here’s some other really interesting facts from this truly inspiring production:

•    The Australian production is only the second in the world. Billy Elliot will open in Broadway in November.
•    Eight boys will have played Billy during the Sydney run.
•    The Billys will have gone through close to 600 pairs of ballet shoes during the run
•    18 semi-trailers of scenery and equipment were delivered to The Capitol Theatre
•    There are close to 200 people who make the show happen every night
•    The cast of 78 range from 8 to 73-years-of-age
•    The costume department created 100 tutus – 23 of these for men to wear in the show’s finale
•    Billy Elliot collected seven Helpmann Awards, equaling the record for the most awards for a single show set by Cabaret in 2002
•    The four young Billys shared the Best Actor in a Musical Award and are the youngest Helpmann Award recipients.

So if you haven’t seen Billy Elliot yet, make sure you book your tickets soon. With music by Elton John, this is one musical, described by The Sydney Morning Herald as “expressive, flexible and near-seamless”, you don’t want to miss.

Billy Elliot: The Musical, until November 9, Capitol Theatre, Haymarket. Tix from $45 ($125 Premium Seats) from ticketmaster.com.au. Further info at billyelliotthemusical.com.au
