Can’t wait for Mardi Gras? Jet over to the Western Australia for the annual Pride Festival. Launching the month-long event is Fair Day, where the GLBT community of Perth comes together to celebrate, and social groups, businesses and government agencies take the opportunity to interact with the community through stalls and live entertainment, amidst a perfect picnic environment in Russell Square, Northbridge. Following that is the Pride International Film Festival on October 1, featuring Pageant, fresh from Sydney’s queerDoc festival. There’s also the Great Gay and Lesbian Debate, with panelists including lesbian WA Senator Louise Pratt, arguing on the topic ‘Lesbians will rule the dancefloors of gay retirement villages’ on October 16. Hosted by GLBT website, GayinWA, the event will raise money for the Gay and Lesbian Retirement Association. Daniel Smith, Chairman of GayinWA, tells SX that the Pride festival “enables us to focus on our identity, but also our special needs as a community.
And it gives our businesses and community groups an opportunity to get their messages out to a large number of people at the one time.”
Last but not least, there’s the colourful Pride Parade on October 25. To keep up to date will all things Pride, as well as the latest news, reviews and entertainment and info in Perth and Western Australia, go to www.gayinwa.com.au.
