Girls on film

Two London lesbians have given the movie world a Sapphic twist with their 2009 calendar, writes Katrina Fox.

What if Hollywood were lesbian? This is the question that inspired photographer Nadia Attura and stylist, hair and make-up artist Mercury to create a series of images that cast an ironic eye over the sirens of the silver screen.

‘Wombraider’, ‘Bra Wars’ and ‘Saturday Night Beaver’ are among the tongue-in-cheek titles of the ilove Film Girls calendar.

“We had such a laugh playing with the film names, giving them a lesbian connotation, encouraging our friends to come up with titles, which at times did sound like porn,” Nadia tells SX.

Based in London’s Notting Hill, ilove was founded in May 2007 by the two women who are “passionate about communicating the beauty of queer identity and showcasing the many faces of 21st-century lesbians and gay men”.

Their first calendar was ilove London Girls which quickly became the face of UK national lesbian magazine DIVA Direct sales and six Gaydar advertising campaigns. Nadia and Mercury also regularly shoot the fashion pages for DIVA and London lesbian magazine G3.

“All the women in our calendars are lesbian, most are friends,” Nadia says. “Others models are women we see in bars and clubs, who we feel would be great to work with. Every couple of months we would scout for women to photograph. It must be quite intimidating seeing Mercury, myself and usually one other model sizing women up in clubs!”

In addition to the film calendar, the pair has also created an ilove Drag calendar and a range of greetings cards.

“People talk about ‘new’ lesbian Lindsay [Lohan] as if women haven’t been getting it on for generations!” Nadia says. “We are simply highlighting the fact that the world around us is full of beautiful, talented, successful and quite ‘normal’ lesbian and gay men who are confident and happy in themselves and their identities, setting a benchmark for others.”

The ilove Film Girls calendar and other products in the series are available from www.ilovelondongirls.com
