Blogging off
blogging-off-250.jpgIf you’re anything like me, you might have been scouting around on here and thought: “I wonder why no one seems to comment much?”

So I asked.

And I’m assured from deep within the cyber-bowels of the publication (sounds ick, but you get me) that this is perfectly normal for the GLBT online community.

Mind you, I usually find myself so time-poor lately that I forget to even look at what I’ve said, let alone check for comments – and with a number of emails to sift through at times, it’s not like I’ve been wondering what I might have been doing wrong or whatever.

Funnily enough – others often text, call or email me about something I’ve said before I even realise it’s gone up – and I shit you not.

Anyhoo... after hearing this, I decided to do a bit of research – and it seems pretty spot on – very few (Oz) queer forums seem to have much interactive commentary – Gaydar aside. The exception to the rule being the odd topical email to the editor or something that’s bordering on inflammatory. Or bagging Kylie.

So when it seems you can’t shut some people up on sites like Blogspot or MSN – I did get to wondering why this might be the case for our community.

A few have said they don’t feel too comfortable posting their names. And of course, we know the cyber-world is also full of cowardly nutters – hiding behind their monitors with fake names and too much time on their hands.

Then again, it dawned on me the other day – I rarely post (elsewhere) myself – and this pretty much comes down to a lack of time or apathy. Although I guess if something gets me really hot under the collar, I might comment briefly.

But otherwise, I’m usually just like ‘meh, next’.

And yah, I confess – I’m one of those annoying manic surfers with little patience for looking at anything for longer than a couple of minutes – you know: several browsers and conversations open at the same time, toggling and clicking all over the shop.

Then there’s also still a lot of people who don’t even realise the paper’s online – bless their cottons. I guess they’re used to picking the ‘fag rags’ up from their usual spot as part of their weekly routine. Etc.

Personally, I try to remember to pick up the paper as well as tuning into whatever might be happening online – which isn’t too much, apparently.

So people – get involved, already! If you’ve got the time and something to say – blog it! And if you’re the ‘shy’ type, why not just use your first name?

I can’t really suggest making one up – ’cos I’d be condoning fraud. Though I don’t quite get why anyone should feel uncomfortable associating their name with their own words and beliefs – unless maybe your motives are suss.

So tune into my next post – when I’ll be condemning Kylie as a talentless scrag.

Just kidding.

Ironic how this blog has sparked off commentary. Nicely done!

I feel there’s actually been more involvement in the gay and lesbian community online since you wrote this, both on SX and in general, so perhaps you can be pleased for your part in that as you finish up your online undertakings.

That does appear to mostly be for news items and controversial community snippets though, so I do believe gay and lesbian blogs in general lack the kind of involvement we note in straight blogs.

Perhaps we only want to talk about Big Boring or Paris Hilton? What a shame.

All the best, Hard Driver.

Another bitter and twisted snipe!

Honestly, I don’t know why people bother posting comments like this. I see what Hard Driver means in ‘Aiming to please’.

I think what he's saying about gay and lesbian blogs is fairly right. And what does research have to do with people commenting?

Grow up and get a life!

"I’m assured ... that this is perfectly normal for the GLBT online community ... after hearing this, I decided to do a bit of research..."

Obviously you haven't done enough research, which is probably why nobody's commenting.
