Seems our Kylie is all grown-up.

A friend and I inadvertently dropped by The Minogue Mansion at Stonewall on Wednesday night and while we’d apparently missed most of the entertainment (including Nikki Webster’s strawberry air-kisses), we still ended up having a great night out on the turps, finding ourselves surrounded by all things Kylie. By the way, is it me or does Stonewall always smell like someone’s just thrown up?

Anywho… the Princess of Pop herself celebrating her 40th with family and friends in Paris, I got to thinking about the diminutive showgirl – and whether you’re a fan or not, there’s simply no denying her ongoing achievements and the perennial allure that has engaged spellbound queens across the globe for the past 28 years of her career.

I’m reminded of my first real interest in her as an artist – back in my early teens, I’d put on a spectacular mime to ‘Loco-Motion’ with my ‘pillow case hair’ and rolling-pin microphone. And yes, I know I’ve said I’m somehow considered ‘straight acting’ - however, like millions of gay boys Worldwide, Miss Minogue had by some means always managed to tap into my inner-showgirl. But you didn’t hear that from me.

Having also been to a few of her concerts, there’s no question that she (or at least her production team), know how to put on a great show. Though after catching Madonna’s Girlie Show (twice, no less), one tends to have pretty high expectations. Don’t get me wrong, Kylie’s shows are usually pretty awesome and maybe it’s a little unfair to be comparing her to The Material Girl, who’s arguably one of the best live performers of our time. But for me, Kylie just seems to lack the shtick we’ve come to expect from Madge.

Nonetheless, Kylie’s achievements (including her triumph over cancer), are nothing to be sneezed at. The UK's Sun newspaper recently described Minogue as an "incredible woman", also saying: "she’s managed the impossible - men lust after her, women love her and little girls want to be her." And as superfluous as that may seem, it’s probably also pretty spot on…and I’d like to think there’s a little bit of Kylie in all of us – if not as timeless showgirls (undeclared or otherwise), then as survivors. And let’s face it, most of us love a good Aussie success story.

Minogue’s comments herself on turning 40: "For me it's no big deal…I've not planned anything spectacular…I’ll celebrate with a small circle of friends and the next day will appear at my next concert."

Speculation still continues as to whether she’ll bring her show Down Under, though I’d be surprised if she didn’t. One thing I’ve always admired about her is that despite falling victim to tall-poppy syndrome in Australia many moons ago, she’s remained loyal to her Oz fans, gay or otherwise. And while I won’t be donning a white sheet or gold hot pants, rolling-pin in hand - my attendance at her next Sydney gig is a definite possibility.
