It was no surprise that my mother hinted she’d love to receive a copy of this album as the annual reward for her unselfish life of Mummydom.
After all, the 18 songs covered by Damien on Catch the Wind were all originally released in her peak fertility years, the 60s and the 70s, so Damien’s marketing at the ABC local radio legions is demographic genius.
His homely tones, pleasant demeanour and sweet manners make him the sort of boy your mother would love you to bring home.
On this third album (after his collections of Idol show-stoppers and original tunes) Damien explores the music of his childhood that he shared growing up with his father – the songs of a generation.
Included are 20th century classics from Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, John Denver, Peter Frampton and Jim Croce, including the golden hits ‘Sunshine on My Shoulders’, ‘Everybody’s Talking’, ‘Blowing in the Wind’, ‘Old Man’, and Don McLean’s legendary Van Gogh tribute, ‘Vincent’.
Damien’s gentle vocal delivery suits these beautiful songs perfectly, and guest appearances from the School of Hard Knocks add a level of musical humility.
