Australia’s wonderful neo-folk maestro, Josh Pyke, returns with an artistically interesting and commercially daring sophomore album. Chimney’s Afire is a theme album, with a theme that harks back to days of yore: Josh has written these songs to celebrate the seafarers who lived precarious existences in rickety boats to we land-lubbers could have fishy feasts. Usually, maritime themes only appeal to gays if we’re thinking sailor boys in tightie whites, or Kylie’s loveboat dancers in tightie, sequinned whites. However, Josh is such a gifted musician and a rousing singer that this collection’s earthy attraction will appeal to folk of all sexualities. The olde worlde topics are underpinned with contemporary musicianship, ensuring the album is far from being a museum piece.
