HOT CHIP (EMI)
Ever since their monkey with a miniature cymbal clanged its way into our cultural consciousness a few years back, the tasty Hot Chip mega band have been a firm staple of our musical diet.
Where these indie club kids were once bedroom musicians surprising themselves with their credible output, Made in the Dark is a resounding statement that the eagle has landed – in the studio anyway.
The songs are more complex without being self-conscious, the lyrics remain cheeky and slightly naff, the vocals kinda off-key and self-effacing, and generally, it’s more left-of-centre than the kids selling Socialist newspapers.
Impress your Kylie-krazy mates with some future indie dance sounds of tomorrow. After all, she did turn down their single ‘Ready For the Floor’. Or did she? It’s a pop mystery.
