ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has vowed to again introduce the Civil Partnerships Bill that seeks to accord gay and lesbian couples within the ACT equality under the law in relation to the recognition of their relationship, before the next state election “come hell or high water”.
Stanhope said during an interview with Joy 94.9 radio in Melbourne that he was currently negotiating with the federal government to try and iron out the “official sticking point” surrounding the ceremony aspect of the Bill, to avoid the federal government quashing the Bill again.
But he said he does not support the relationship register model adopted by Tasmania and Victoria and “won’t compromise” on the model put forward to the electorate.
