Education in GLBT issues and lifestyles for staff in aged care facilities is key to helping the older queer community avoid isolation and having to gonews1-250.jpg back into the closet.

This was one of many conclusions to come out of ACON’s forum Ageing Disgracefully on Monday. Audience and panel members – including Siri May, Ghassan Kassisieh, Carmen, Jane Marsden, Lloyd Grosse and Justice Michael Kirby – were facilitated in their discussions by Julie McCrossin.

Kirby lambasted organised religion for its homophobic teachings and praised queer rights campaigners, but added that he was not a great supporter of retirement homes or villages specifically for the GLBT community. “It’s important to avoid ghettoisation,” he said.

While I would like to agree that ghettoisation is to be avoided, unfortunately studies in the US and UK have shown that both residents and care givers in care facilities are ignorant at best and downright homophobic at worst.

So while gay-specific care facilities are not the ideal, it does make sense if you consider the alternative - and that, for the majority, is to slam the closet door firmly shut.

There are now over 25 such facilities either in planning or development in the USA - some aimed at those on low incomes. Sadly there is nothing in Australia, but Thailand and Sri Lanka already have two.
