Education in GLBT issues and lifestyles for staff in aged care facilities is key to helping the older queer community avoid isolation and having to go back into the closet.
This was one of many conclusions to come out of ACON’s forum Ageing Disgracefully on Monday. Audience and panel members – including Siri May, Ghassan Kassisieh, Carmen, Jane Marsden, Lloyd Grosse and Justice Michael Kirby – were facilitated in their discussions by Julie McCrossin.
Kirby lambasted organised religion for its homophobic teachings and praised queer rights campaigners, but added that he was not a great supporter of retirement homes or villages specifically for the GLBT community. “It’s important to avoid ghettoisation,” he said.
