Attorney-General to celebrate reforms

mclellan250.jpgFederal Attorney-General Robert McClelland will speak at a special event to be held by the grassroots ALP queer group, Rainbow Labor, on Friday, October 31, at the Charles Hewitt Gallery in Darlinghurst.

The event, titled ‘Same Sex Same Entitlements’, will celebrate the Labor Party’s GLBTIQ movement, while also thanking McClelland for introducing same-sex law reforms, which are currently under senate perusal (due to be discussed when the senate reconvenes between October 13-October 23).

Rainbow Labor co-convenor, Michael Vaughan, told SX that McClelland’s willingness to come to the event shows his commitment to queer rights.

“We’ve seen him put these reforms through as quickly as he can in a really difficult political climate,” Vaughan noted. “We see a really strong ally and supporter in him.”

The event will raise funds for Rainbow Labor’s future campaigns, which will put relationship recognition as a firm priority, Vaughan said.

“There are going to be times when Rainbow Labor is working towards different policy ends than the party platform, and relationship recognition is one of those areas,” he said. “We believe that full equality for the gay and lesbian community will only be delivered when all forms of relationship recognition, including marriage, are equally available.”

Tickets are $60 waged, $40 unwaged, including a dinner and a glass of champagne. RSVP by October 20 to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
