bakeoff250.jpgThe Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) has raised approximately $47,000 from its annual Bake-Off fundraising event, which was held at the Midnight Shift on Sunday, June 15. The cake competition and auction featured 120 entries, up from 75 entries last year, and attracted over 1000 people.

“Both the number of people and the number of entries demonstrates the community’s keenness to be involved in Bake-Off,” BGF CEO Bev Lange told SX. “The essence of Bake-Off, particularly on its 21st anniversary, is alive and well and ready for next year.”

While the funds are down from last year’s $53,000 total, Lange said that increased interest rates, petrol prices, and even the rainy weather, may have impacted upon the amount. “We’re still very happy with the result – it’s an extraordinary increase over past years,” Lange told SX.

The judges, comedian Julia Morris, Sydney drag queen Claire de Lune and chefs Christine Manfield and Patrick Collins, awarded Best in Show to The Joker by Glen Lewis (Miss 3D of Sweet Art). Seven other awards were given for cakes, jams, small goods and more. Drag personality Mitzi Macintosh hosted the auction, which saw Lewis’ cake sell for a healthy $6,500. Extra cakes that were not auctioned were donated to the Luncheon Club, now managed by the BGF and ACON.

The money raised will help fund the BGF’s programs for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS. These programs will be focused on in upcoming fundraisers. The BGF’s Winter Appeal throughout June will help fund a supported accommodation program for those at risk of homelessness.
