CAAH gears up for same-sex marriage ban protest PDF Print E-mail

The fourth annual National Day of Action for Same Sex Marriage will be held on Sunday, August 3.

Organised by Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH), the event was initiated in 2004 when the same-sex marriage ban was passed. Each year crowds have attended a rally to draw attention to the inequality in law.

“Our government is clearly homophobic,” CAAH spokesperson Emilia Lawonski said in a statement. “We deserve the same rights as heterosexual couples and we do not accept homophobia as a valid reason for the Rudd government to continue banning same-sex marriage.”

Heidi Claus from the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association said the Rudd government has failed to deliver on many fronts including health, education and indigenous communities.

“I’ve just been at the National Union of Students Queer Collaborations Conference,” she said. “The theme was ‘Freedoms are won, not given’, and that’s what we need to do now: fight for freedom in our relationships, not wait for Labor to give them, because they won’t. Even when individual states try to bring in civil unions, the Rudd government steps in, which is why we have to take to the streets.”

The Sydney rally will start at 1pm at Taylor Square, Darlinghurst before marching to Town Hall.
