Longtime GLBT and feminist activist Lesley Lynch has joined Clover Moore’s Independent team for the City of Sydney council elections in September.
“I was a young married woman with a child but I moved through identification as a bisexual in the late ’60s when there was very little around to help any of us think this through,” Lynch told SX.
In addition to becoming involved in the women’s movement, Lynch was a member of Camp Ink, Australia’s first gay and lesbian civil rights organisation. After working as a university teacher she moved into the public service. “My first job was to head a social policy unit and for 15 years the heartbreaking thing was homophobia in schools,” she said. “We [also] had to grapple with the cases of HIV and AIDS – there was no policy, no framework. I reckon we had the first HIV/AIDS policy in schools in Australia; probably the first in the public sector in Australia.”
Lynch was Director of Curriculum for NSW public schools and as regional Director of Teaching and Learning, she was responsible for managing education programs in public schools within the City. Most recently, she has worked in Papua New Guinea on AusAID projects, including a review of the national education department and national library.
“I have immense admiration for Clover – she’s had guts,” she said of her decision to join Moore’s team. “I think it’s incredibly important we keep the City of Sydney Council independent. If you want a team committed to social justice and the removal of discrimination, you’ve got it in this team.”
