Clover rides in on anti-Labor backlash
clover-moore-300.jpgClover Moore has kept her position as Lord Mayor of Sydney, citing Labor Government problems in the state for a backlash against the party.

The Clover Moore Independent Group retained Sydney's top job for Moore by a comfortable margin of 47 per cent.

The Greens won 18 per cent, of the groups vote, the Liberals 15 per cent and Labor 14.

Sydney Labor Councillor and Lord Mayor candidate Meredith Burgmann told the ABC voters were angry with the state's Labor Government.

"We knew they'd whack us a bit, and that's what they've done," she said.

Described in SX earlier this month as a “queer champion”, Moore faced criticism in the lead up to the election over Oxford Street safety and The Imperial Hotel’s development application.

Liberal candidate Shayne Mallard drew widespread publicity with his claims that Oxford Street safety had been disastrous under Moore’s watch. His slamming of her support for the establishment of a 'homophobia-free zone' in Oxford Street drew national media attention.

Moore's record of support for gay men and lesbians is extensive. She introduced the Anti-Discrimination (Homosexual Vilification) Amendment Bill to outlaw anti-gay vilification in NSW in 1993, introduced the first bill to outlaw discrimination against transgender people, has sought amendments to the Adoption Act to allow same-sex couple to adopt, and marched in the last sixteen Mardi Gras Parades.
