Gary Burns takes on Jeff Kennett
newsjeff-250.jpgFresh from his 2UE settlement victory gay activist Gary Burns has written to the President of the Anti-Discrimination Board of NSW (ADB), complaining of possible “vilification of homosexuals” by former Victorian Premier and President of the Hawthorn AFL football club Jeff Kennett.

Kennett told a Melbourne newspaper that country football club Bonnie Doon was correct to sack its trainer of 22 years, Ken Campagnolo, when it discovered he was bisexual (SX #392).

“Kennett’s defence in support of the sacking is his belief that because the trainer was massaging young men they ran an unnecessary risk from Campagnolo of paedophilia because of the trainer’s admission to his bisexuality and the public knowing of it,” Burns wrote in the letter, seen by SX.

“I believe Mr Kennett’s comments could urge, spur on or stimulate hatred, serious contempt or severe ridicule for male homosexuals,” Burns continued.

Burns said he brought the complaint to dispel the myth that male homosexuality is linked in any way to paedophilia.

“This is not just a fight about my idealism, it is a fight to prevent male homosexuals from becoming products for male children to fear,” he told SX.

mmm I thought Ken's sexual orientation is that of an out bisexual man, not as a homosexual. Perhaps I've misread the articles and misheard what Ken stated in his interview on Joy FM on the weekend.

I found the whole bisexual oppression and comparison of bisexuality to paedophilia by Jeff Kennett to be upsetting and depressing to the point where I sought to post on the DepressioNet Website Forums so I could discuss with others my feelings.

Needless to say, the post was removed.

The reasons given were in my view lame.

"1) The post was discussing a specific person in the Mental Health field; 2) The post could upset other members, and therefore cause debate; and 3) The post was not related to depression. (Name), here at depressioNet we try to keep all posts related to depression and the way it affects us, as this is what our services are catered for. depressioNet is a human service organisation and our services are there to enable people to give and receive support from each other while they manage their depression. When a post talks about issues in the media that are not related to the issue of depression, we have no choice but to remove it as there are many other forums that provide this type of service."

For a long time I've felt ill at ease with Kennett's affiliation with Beyond Blue, this was the last straw and I've since written to Beyond Blue to tell them as long as Kennett is involved I will not be supporting them in any way, sadly I got no response to the mail I sent them which kind of makes me glad I'm diverting my energies to more supportive and personal organisiations.

The gay community is not very happy with Mr Kennett's comments where he is reported to have said "he does not have to aplogise to the gay community as he has not offended them." I know for a fact that his comments have offended both me personally and the wider gay community.
