| GLBT doco festival kicks off |
|
The theme of this year’s event is journeying, whether that be around the world or taking a personal journey, Queer Screen manager Lex Lindsay told the crowd. Now in its 11th year, queerDOC is still one of the few festivals dedicated to screening queer documentaries – a genre Lindsay believes is particularly important. “Although leaders of certain countries may say they don’t have any gays or lesbians, we know they have – and we’ve got the film to prove it!” he said. The opening night film, screened at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington, was The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela (pictured) – the story of a poor ladyboy prostitute in the Philippines whose dream is to go to Paris for a “better life”. After becoming popular on an internet porn site specialising in ladyboys, she gets the chance to go to Europe.
queerDOC runs until 14 September. For more information visit www.queerscreen.com.au
