Greens MP Lee Rhiannon is set to introduce a private members Bill in State Parliament calling for gay civil unions later this year.
“This is the year when we need to win full relationship rights. I will move in the NSW Parliament a private members Bill for same-sex and transgendered civil unions, and together with our federal colleagues we will continue to campaign for marriage rights for all,” Rhiannon said.
The move is part of the Greens plan of gay and lesbian activities for 2008. The plan was announced following the first meeting of the party’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Working Group held this week.
Also on the Greens top priority is to combat the rising levels of homophobic violence, with the party’s police spokesperson, Sylvia Hale, calling on Surry Hills police to be more proactive in addressing the issue.
“We are committed to ensuring that homophobic violence is reduced across the state. We will highlight this issue in the coming local government election campaign,” Rhiannon said.
The Greens will also step up its support for full equality in gay adoption and foster parenting, as well as transgender rights, which include “lobbying for all official documents to reflect one’s socially presented sex and gender identity”.
