Groups praise landmark forum
newsgroups-250.jpgRepresentatives of GLBT rights groups met with 15 Federal government agencies to discuss same-sex law reforms on Wednesday in Canberra, marking the first time so many agencies had collectively consulted with the GLBT community.

Overseen by the Federal Attorney-General’s Department, the Whole of Government Officials Meeting for Same Sex Law Reform brought senior representatives from the Attorney-General’s Department together with representatives from the Australian Coalition for Equality (ACE), the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, the Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group, and GLBT rights experts Wayne Morgan, Miranda Stewart and Jamie Gardiner.

“It’s a united front to talk holistically with all of the stakeholders,” ACE spokesperson Corey Irlam told SX. “It’s a great first step – we hope to have more of them.”

The forum focused on definitions in the federal government’s upcoming same-sex de facto legislation package, although no draft legislation was provided for the discussion.

It was suggested that there be a centralised portal for members of the public to access legal information for whole-of-government changes, said Irlam. He added that same-sex marriage and transgendered rights should be discussed at the next, as yet unplanned, consultation.
