Heath Ledger dead at 28

heath-2-250.jpgActor Heath Ledger was found dead in a Manhattan apartment on Tuesday afternoon, according to New York City police.

The New York Times reported a police source who indicated suicide or an accidental overdose as the cause of death.

Ledger’s body was discovered by a masseuse at a fourth-floor apartment in SoHo. heath-3-250.jpg

The masseuse was let in by a housekeeper and the pair discovered Ledger naked and unconscious on a bed, with sleeping pills — both prescription medication and nonprescription — on a night table.

Attempts to revive the actor failed.

Heathcliff Andrew Ledger was born April 4, 1979 to Sally Ledger, a French teacher, and Kim Ledger, an engineer. heath-4-250.jpg

Named after the main characters of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights.” He and his older sister, Katherine, grew up in Perth, Australia; his parents were divorced when he was about 10.

As a student, he joined a local theater company and appeared in a production of Peter Pan, which led to his being cast in children’s television programs.

Although he found success with films like 10 Things I Hate About You, and the Australian film Two Hands, Ledger was best known for his role in Brokeback Mountain (2005).

Based on a story by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain depicts two cowboys who fall in love.

Ledger is survived by a daughter with actress Michelle Williams, whom he met while filming Brokeback.

His most recent role was in the film I’m Not There, in which he was one of a number of actors depicting Bob Dylan.
