Hundreds gather to remember Atlanta
Over 200 people from the GLBT and drag community gathered today to remember Paul McCarter, the man behind popular Sydney drag queen Atlanta Georgia.

McCarter passed away last Wednesday from a colloid cyst, which caused a brain condition called hydrocephalus. He was 36.

The service was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Darlinghurst.

Heartfelt eulogies were delivered by Paul’s brother Stephen McCarter, Paul’s best friend Frank Johnson, and his friend Gaynor Beardsworth, who he worked with at St Vincent’s Hospital as a nurse.

“I’ve lost my best friend, but now I have a guardian angel,” Johnson told the congregation.

The hymns ‘Breathe on me, Breath of God’, ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Here I am Lord’ were sung. Two songs chosen by Paul were played in his honour: ‘Buses and Trains’ and ‘Walk Away Lover’.

Many in attendance wore orange garments or held orange flowers in memory of McCarter, whose favourite colour was orange.

In lieu of flowers, attendees were asked to donate to ACON, with a collection box at the front of the church.

The wake was held at Slide nightclub.
