The health and wellbeing needs of lesbians and same-sex attracted women in NSW are to be addressed.
ACON launched a draft strategy this week and is calling for public comment. The three-year strategy outlines nine key health action areas: sexual health, ageing, alcohol and other drugs, mental health and wellbeing, violence, cancer, relationships, parenting and fertility, and youth.
“Over the last eight years we have been gradually developing our work in lesbian health as needs were identified and new funding came through,”
ACON CEO Stevie Clayton told SX. “That means that it has been more opportunistic than consciously planned. The aim of this strategy is to make our health promotion work with lesbians more strategic and focused.
The strategy attempts to identify the main health issues for lesbians flowing from a slowly but steadily growing evidence base. From this we can define which programs should be delivered by ACON directly, which should be done by others and where we need to be advocating for improved services.”
ACON is now calling for comment on the draft strategy. “We’d like to know if we’ve got the priorities right, if we’ve missed anything and if people feel the strategy is relevant for the individual needs of local communities,” Lesbian Health Project Officer Siri May said.
The draft strategy and an online feedback form are available at www.acon.org.au. Comments will be accepted until the end of June.
