Libs leadership change promising

newslibs-300.jpgMalcolm Turnbull has replaced Dr Brendan Nelson as the Leader of the Federal Opposition.

Turnbull, member for the seat of Wentworth in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, took the reins of the Liberal Party on Tuesday, after Dr Nelson called a leadership spill and lost.
Turnbull’s appointment marks a potential boon for GLBT communities, with the new Liberal leader being a supporter of equal rights. In August last year, The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Turnbull had “embarked on a personal crusade to convince his [Howard Government] colleagues to allow same-sex couples the same legal and financial rights as heterosexual and married couples.”

In the wake of Turnbull’s win, Shayne Mallard, the City of Sydney’s openly-gay Liberal councillor, told SX: “Malcolm Turnbull is a very open, approachable and compassionate man, who’s demonstrated a real interest in the gay community. He is on the record as supporting superannuation reforms and the HREOC recommendations.

This is a good development for our community.”

The most immediate test of Turnbull's gay friendly credentials is how swiftly he can secure bipartisan passage of the government's equality reforms through the Senate.

Malcolm, show us that you are a Coalition leader we can trust and believe in.
