Mardi Gras secures 3-year deal for Harbour Party

The future of the ‘Harbour Party’, one of the most popular events held during the Mardi Gras Festival, has been secured with a new three-year deal between New Mardi Gras and the Botanic Gardens Trust.

The outdoor event, held at the Fleet Steps in Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, will be staged and produced by New Mardi Gras from 2009, allowing festival organisers to fully integrate the event into the Mardi Gras season.

Next year, it will be held on Sunday, March 1, and will fly under the banner, ‘Harbour ’09’.

“We are delighted to be working with the Botanic Gardens Trust on a longer term basis,” said New Mardi Gras CEO, Anna McInerney.

“The agreement provides us with a solid basis on which to invest in the creativity and production values of the party and ensure its place as a signature event on our festival calendar”.

Last year, a tender was granted to New Mardi Gras to organise the event in 2008, after the five-year event license of the previous producers, the Iris Group, expired in 2007.

The success of this year’s event, Sol Y Luna, helped secure the deal, said Dr Tim Entwisle, the Executive Director of Botanic Gardens Trust.

“This event has been on the Botanic Garden Trust’s annual event calendar for over a decade, and we’re thrilled to continue the tradition by hosting this event for the gay and lesbian community during the Mardi Gras Festival 2009 festivities,” Entwisle said.

McInerney said she was excited by the announcement and the opportunity of hosting a signature event at such an iconic location.

“We want to bring a bit of the creative magic of the Mardi Gras Party and Sleaze Ball to the harbourside,” McInerney said. “We’re expecting this signature event to attract a flock of interstate, international and local party goers. Judging by the amount of interest we have had so far, I’d advise people to get in early to secure tickets.”

The date when tickets go on sale will be announced soon.

yeah great and what about the donations to the GLCS, Twenty10, Queerscreen, the AIDS Trust and the Iris Foundation Reg?

Mardi Gras has simply provided a very small amount to the rights lobby and pocketed the rest.

- i thought you were actually a better journo reg - disappointing - very disappointing. Or worse still did Iris remain silent about this - again?
