McKenney claims drink was spiked PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 28 April 2008
todd-mckenney-250.jpgTV personality Todd McKenney has thanked fans for their "incredible support" following a drugs bust on Friday.

The Dancing with the Stars judge was arrested for possession of GHB when he collapsed after allegedly headbutting a fence early on Anzac Day.

However, McKenney, who claims his drink was spiked at a party, was back behind the microphone co-hosting his Sydney radio show this morning.

"I've finally made the front page of the papers - unfortunately under these circumstances - but I've had incredible support from the listeners and at this point I want to say thanks for that," McKenney told Mix 106.5FM listeners.

Media colleagues have also rallied behind the former Boy from Oz.

McKenney's radio boss, Anthony Fitzgerald, said the entertainer was a "poor victim of drink-spiking".

"Anyone who knows him knows drugs are not nor have they ever been part of his lifestyle," Fitzgerald told the Daily Telegraph.

"He's quite shaken by the whole situation. It is very out of character for him."

Friend and Hollywood star Hugh Jackman, who replaced McKenney in The Boy from Oz, was shocked when told about the incident.

"Oh my God, I had no idea," Jackman said.

"My heart goes out to him. That is absolutely terrible, terrible news. I just hope that he is OK,'' he said.

In an interview with Channel Seven's Today Tonight, McKenney described the sensations he felt at the party.

"After one drink I felt very sick and then my face got hot and I had, like my ears got very, very hot and I just knew instantly that something wasn't right," McKenney said.

"So as I kept walking I could just feel myself just having the most insane kind of collapses of mind and then I was panicking because it was a feeling I've just never felt before."

Though police allege McKenney produced a small vial of clear liquid and told them it was GHB, McKenney told Channel Seven he didn't know that it was in his pocket.

"I've never used it and I don't use it. I'm completely against it."

Nonetheless, the caustic TV judge said he was not naïve.

"I'm savvy, I know what goes on in town, I'm not dumb and whoever, I can only assume whoever planted the G in my pocket also spiked my drink.

"They obviously wanted to put the boot into me."

McKenney, who was disqualified for driving under the influence of alcohol earlier this month, is due to face court on May 16.

There is more that can be done to prevent drink spiking incidents, like using test cards and coasters manufactured by drink safe technologies which have been independently proven by the University of Wollongong years ago. It's a pity the authorities don't make this technology more widely available and stop innocent people becoming victims of this cowardly act.
