Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has continued to pressure the NSW government to provide funding for New Mardi Gras (NMG)
Last Friday in parliament, Moore asked the state government to follow up on her earlier request in April for a decision to be made about whether NMG would be funded as a Hallmark Event, after its 30-year anniversary this year.
“The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras generates more than $45 million for the New South Wales economy each year and the government should support this non-profit event,” Moore told SX.
“Mardi Gras celebrates Sydney’s diversity and tolerance, as well as being a focus for equality campaigns.
“Both the community and I are keen to see what action has been taken since my question in Parliament when the Premier promised to have Events NSW look at financial support.”
David Imrie, Chair of NMG, told SX that the NSW government’s stalling will have a direct impact on next year’s season. “We are now three months into our corporate financial year and not knowing our funding position is hindering our planning process for next season,” Imrie said.
The government is expected to respond when parliament resumes in September.
