Mardi Gras has a new chairperson following the election of David Imrie (pictured) in a unanimous vote this week.
Imrie's appointment on Tuesday follows the resignation of Marcus Bourget after three years at the helm.
Previously a board member and sponsor of Fair Day, Imrie told SX he was excited to take on the job at such a positive time for the organisation, and as Mardi Gras went through a period of debriefing following this year's success.
He said a key goal for the future was to put in place a formalised structure "to give back to the community through a funding process, officially and formally".
“We’re speaking with our friends and supporters about what they loved
about this year’s Mardi Gras and how we could do better next year,”
he said.
“It’s a good time for me to continue this listening process so I can build on our successes.”
Imrie said he hoped to put together a membership program that "really engages members and makes them feel more included in the festival".
While stressing the importance of the Party to the festival's financial success, he said he would like to see the program broaden to appeal to a wider cross-section of the community.
He encouraged the community to thank his predecessor, Marcus Bourget, for giving
Mardi Gras back its "mojo".
Bourget said he was pleased to have led the organisation at a critical time and enjoyed watching its rebirth.
“I’m most proud of the renewed enthusiasm the community has for Mardi Gras, especially as we saw with the success of this year’s 30th anniversary season,” he said.
“While I’m sad to be leaving the position I’ve enjoyed for the past three years, it’s a good time to hand the reins over.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved in Mardi Gras for all your support and would like to wish David all the very best as Mardi Gras enters the next phase of her exciting and glamorous life.”
Bourget will remain on the board to transfer knowledge and maintain a high level of involvement with Mardi Gras.
The annual general meeting for New Mardi Gras members will be held in August 2008.
