New queer arts mag for Melbourne

A hot new magazine is set to hit the streets of Melbourne next week.

Canvas will be a fortnightly arts and entertainment mag for the LGBT community. It will explore what’s on and what’s hot in Melbourne’s galleries, theatres, cinemas and bookshops and present interviews with actors, authors, directors, dancers and others engaged in the creative arts.

Canvas will feature regular sections such as Stimulate (performing arts, theatre, dance, circus and more) Dictate (literature, poetry, book reviews and author interviews) Compose (music) Illuminate (cinema) Contemplate (visual arts) and Retreat (home entertainment and travel).

Editor Richard Watts is well known on the Melbourne arts scene. Among other achievements he is chair of the Melbourne Fringe Festival Board and presents SmartArts on radio Three Triple R.

“To say I’m excited about starting up a brand new arts, entertainment, and lifestyle publication for the LGBT community is an understatement,” said Watts. “Obviously editing Canvas will play to my strengths, given my background and previous experience; but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to further showcase the creativity and diversity of queer Melbourne, and Melbourne’s broader arts sector generally.”

The new publication will be produced by Evolution Publishing, publishers of MCV, SX, blaze, Queensland Pride, AXN, Cherrie and Fellow Traveller.

Publisher Peter Walton said, “Melbourne has always been recognised as the arts and cultural centre of Australia. That’s just as true of queer Melbourne. We’re very happy to be launching a new magazine for the LGBT community covering arts and related issues.

“Canvas will also give advertisers a choice in the Melbourne LGBT market.”

Canvas promises to foster debate and encourage new ideas and fine writing. The first issue will be out on Thursday, October 9.
