NSW Young Labor backs gay rights

ImageSame-sex marriage, adoption and anti-homophobia training for teachers were among the policies endorsed without dissent by Young Labor in NSW on the weekend.

The policy motions put the youth wing of the Australian Labor Party in NSW in conflict with the larger party, which opposes same-sex marriage.

“I think the larger party needs to embrace the notion that young people have different ideas on policy in some areas,” Rainbow Labor co-convenor and conference delegate Michael Vaughn told Evolution Online.

“That’s one of the strengths of having young people in the party, and I expect and believe they will embrace young people speaking out on the issue.

He said the “great policies on queer issues” were passed without dissent at the August 16 conference.

“The structure of the conference is such that because there’s a bulk of policy, motions get moved as part of reports with recommendations attached. Those three policy reports had recommendations to accept the motions, and they were carried successfully.

“If there had been dissent, a motion would have been made and the issue debated,” Vaughn said.
