Queer interests off Summit agenda PDF Print E-mail

GLBT issues have been sidelined from the Australia 2020 Summit held at the weekend, according to Shelley Argent from PFLAG.

The initial report of the Summit has been released, but Argent, one of the participants, said in a statement: “At the final session when there was discussion about the main priorities to be addressed, one was same-sex civil unions, but when the official presentation of our ideas was presented, not only was it not mentioned, but it wasn’t in the written summary presented to the 1002 delegates as we left Parliament House.

“My gripe is by removing it from the list of top priorities it will be hidden and certainly not considered the top priority that was decided by the group.”
Another participant, Diversity Consultant Margherita Coppolino from Melbourne, also said that queer issues were left off the agenda at the final summing up, although she feels confident GLBT issues were heard and would be listed in the final report.

A spokesperson for Tanya Plibersek, Federal Member for Sydney, echoed Coppolino’s assurances that GLBT issues raised will be addressed.
“The best we can say is that the government made a commitment to respond to all issues raised by the end of the end of the year. The initial report is not the end of it.”
