Inner Sydney police have arrested 17 people after a high-visibility operation was conducted on licensed premises last Saturday night, targeting drug and alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour.
The Surry Hills, Kings Cross and City Central Local Area Commands participated in ‘Operation Rolling Thunder II’, following the success of the ‘Operation Rolling Thunder’ blitz by the Surry Hills police over the June long weekend, which saw more than 70 people arrested.
The newest operation charged 32 people, and arrested 17, for offences including the possession and supply of prohibited drugs, resisting arrest, offensive behaviour, assault and more.
The police seized drugs including ice, ecstasy and cocaine. Police checked 30 licensed premises, and searched 29 people and six vehicles.
Acting Central Metropolitan Region Commander and Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch said that the police will continue the alcohol and drug crackdown.
“Criminal behaviour, regardless of whether it’s associated with alcohol or drug consumption, won’t be tolerated by the NSW Police Force,” Murdoch said in a statement.
The operation involved police from the State Protection Group Dog Unit, Operation Support Group, Public Order Riot Squad, Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad, and Region Enforcement Squad.
Murdoch added that future operations on inner-city entertainment areas would continue to go ahead.
“If you play up, then you can expect police action – it’s as simple as that,” Murdoch said.
