The Bookshop scoops top business award

bookshop90.jpgSydney’s iconic gay and lesbian bookshop, The Bookshop Darlinghurst, took home a prestigious Chamber and Business Partnership Community Award at the City of Sydney’s 2008 Business Awards held on Wednesday, 27 August.

Founder and proprietor, Les McDonald, told SX he was “chuffed” to receive the award, which was judged by local representatives from business, government and academia.

“It’s great to get some recognition for The Bookshop, which has become a bit of a local landmark, and it’s a testament to our staff and the support we’ve enjoyed from our customers,” he said.

McDonald, who founded The Bookshop in 1982, said the Oxford Street store had weathered various changes over the years, including the emergence of the internet sales, the introduction of competing media, and changes to the Oxford Street precinct.

“We’ve developed a significant web-based sales component in response to that change ... another change is that we now sell a significant number of DVDs, whereas we only sold books when we started,” he said.

McDonald said future plans for the store included continuing to support local charities with funds and free books, and a possible move to larger premises in the long term.
