Trans activists have welcomed a Family Court decision to allow a 12-year-old child – a genetic female who presents as male – to access hormonal treatment to halt the onset of puberty. But they lambasted the inaccurate reporting of the story by the mainstream media.

“It has been reported with considerable incompleteness and lack of balance,” spokesperson for TransGender Victoria, Sally Goldner, said. “Firstly, the incorrect use of pronouns, which is contemptuous to the person involved and to the Family Court; and [secondly] headlines like ‘Girl, 12, wins sex change’. He is not having a ‘sex change’; he is having a reversible course of medication until he is 16.”

The child’s mother supported the child’s desire to undergo treatment that will halt the physical onset of puberty, including menstruation and breast development, but the father opposed the application.

The child will also be allowed to apply for a new birth certificate, passport and Medicare card.

Accredited family law specialist Rachael Wallbank said the treatment of transsexualism in adolescents should not be up to the courts to decide whether they should receive treatment or not  “This case is a good example where a child’s treatment could be threatened by becoming involved as a vehicle for argument between the parents,” she told SX.
