Tributes flow for Atlanta Georgia

atlanta250.jpgSydney’s GLBT and drag community is reeling from the news that well-known drag performer Atlanta Georgia has passed away at the age of 36.

While it was initially believed that she had passed away on Thursday, September 4, an autopsy indicated that Atlanta (real name Paul McCarter) died on Wednesday, September 3, from a colloid cyst, which caused a brain condition called hydrocephalus.

She was due to undergo an operation for the condition at St Vincent’s Hospital on Monday.

Atlanta, who performed at a wide range of Sydney venues during her career – including The Imperial, The Flinders, The Albury, DCM and the Kings Cross Hotel – was born in Newcastle, but was raised in Melbourne. She moved to Sydney in the early 1990s.

After becoming one of Sydney’s most successful drag performers of the late ’90s and early 2000s – scoring a Drag Industry Variety Award (DIVA) ‘Rising Star’ gong in 1998, and performing at several Mardi Gras and Sleaze parties – Atlanta all but gave up drag to focus on a full-time career in nursing.

Close friend and fellow drag performer Penny Tration said Atlanta would be remembered as “a loud, colourful, fabulous person that you couldn’t ignore”.

“She was one of those people that you either loved or loathed – but even if you loathed her, you couldn’t help but be riveted by her,” she told SX.

Drag queen Maxi Shield, who performed with Atlanta in the Fame/Flashdance show at the 2004 Mardi Gras, described Atlanta’s passing as “a huge loss”.

“Atlanta was just like this big cartoon – she very loud and colourful, with make-up that literally glowed from across the room,” she said.

Atlanta played an integral role in her own drag career, she recalled, giving Maxi her first break in The Flinders Hotel show ‘Fast Food Follies’.

Penny Clifford, one of the founding members of DIVA, remembered Atlanta as “fabulous, funny gal who always had the most fantastic frocks”.

“She was a very talented performer; one of those people who was always entertaining,” said Clifford.

Farren Heit, Penny Tration and Maxi Shield performed several classic Atlanta numbers in a tribute at Pollies Follies, at the Stonewall Hotel on Sunday night.

A funeral service for Atlanta will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Darlinghurst (corner of Darlinghurst Road and Oxford Street) at 1.30pm on Thursday, September 11, followed by a wake at Slide (41 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst).

In lieu of flowers, funeral attendees have been asked to donate money to ACON, with an ACON collector in attendance.

Organisers have requested that attendees wear smart attire, preferably with a touch of the colour orange, and that people do not come in drag, so as not to draw attention away from the purpose of the event.

A tribute page commemorating Atlanta Georgia has also been set up on social networking site Facebook.

Although not having see you now for some 9 years, I want to express my deepest heartfelt
condolances on the loss of your brother, Ruthie. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed each and every moment you spent together -- he looked like a colorful fellow, to say the least. May you cherish him forever and may his memory be eternal.

What a shame we were never able to penetrate the age barrier and get to know the real Paul who we now admire for his true perspective of life and his joy of living

I remember being a very young, newly out dyke on the scene that Atlanta took under wing for a brief but fab time. I think Atlanta took delight in showing this young, naive kid exactly how drag queens got to look so girly, and was in stitches at the threat of making me dress up too...

She will be sorely missed.... not only on the scene, but by humanity.

RIP

I met Paul/Atlanta while living in Sydney in the 90's..I remember him saying to me "I don't much like lesbians but your ok.." He was later to introduce me to his sister Ruth who I instantly befriended and like Paul enjoyed many years of fun and frolicks while living in Sydney. I also have a memory of Paul making me a costume to wear to a dance party in Melbourne called Winter Daze. I went as a 70's disco diva and he made me the sexiest pair of denim overalls, boned and gathered in all the right places..he was so talented when it came to sewing and just creating stuff!!
Although I havn't lived in Sydney for the past 7 years I have remained good friends with Ruth and have enjoyed updates on what Paul has been upto over the years. I feel priveleged to have known such a caring, talented and funny man. You will be missed dearly Paul. All my love

I met Paul/Atlanta when he started working as a nurse on the ward that I worked on at St Vincent's Hospital. He was so desperate to succeed in his new nursing career that he told me he'd make a deal with me - if I taught him confidence on the ward, he'd teach me confidence on the gay scene. I had no doubt, given his personality that he would need any help from me. And he didn't! He became one of the finest nurses I've ever worked with. But he kept his end of the deal. He took me out and introduced me to all of Sydney's gay A-list, got me into clubs without queueing (or paying) and gave me insights into the gay community that I would never have known about. In short, he took a socially challenged loner, and turned my life around, for which I will always be truly grateful.
This news has rocked me to my core. I will miss you, my friend. And I'm glad that I got to see both the fantastic performer, as well as the amazingly confident, hillariously funny and warm and caring soul that you were. RIP my friend.

There are so many memories I have of the very fabulous Atlanta.

The biggest would be handing out flyers for DCM at fair day, she stole a lesbian's ice cream, then told people in the lines for a portaloo, that Mardi Gras skimped on the budget: "There is no dunny paper, here you'll need one of these", as she stuffed a couple of flyers into their hand.
Later that day I was working at DCM, there was a call in the cloakroom for me. It was Atlanta, and all she said was, "Hi, it's Atlanta. Where did you go? It's cold and dark and there is no food here". Then she hung up on me.

I am the one that is a colder and it's a little darker now.

I will always smile when I think of you.

Whilst I drifted from Paul over the past few years as our lives took on different directions so many times I would have a little giggle at the strangest moments of the 'antics' that we used to get up to on those lost weekends.

We would often call each other are talk about the 'good times' only for a few seconds have a good laugh and then go back to what we were doing. We never did get to have that dinner !

I cherished how our friendship blossomed from weekend buddies (people were concerned that if we saw each other more just at weekends there would be trouble) to flat-mates, colleagues AND comedy partner ( as much as I tried to replace him he was the original and the BEST !!!)

Paul and I knew each others BULLSHIT so well that we could convince complete strangers without any doubt in their mind that :

Paul's baby brother was found dead in a beanbag while he was meant to be baby sitting him so he could never look at bean bags again. In fact on more that one occasion we made people take them out of the room because it traumatized him so much.

When people asked us what we do for work that we told them we were the voices for the non english speaking people you saw on the news - 'You know like when someone talks in Japanese and then someone translates it into english but with an accent' I was the Asian specialist he was the European one !

We worked for play school selecting what window would be looked through. I was a VERY important job because kinds would bet lunches etc on what the choice would be today and it took a lot of research.

While Paul has left us those memories and laughs will always be with us !!!
