Voters want Moore

Clover Moore has been returned as Lord Mayor of Sydney in the NSW Local Government Elections on Saturday. Moore, who largely campaigned on a platform of environmental sustainability and public works, won by a comfortable margin with her Independent Team drawing 47 per cent of the vote.

"We thank the community for supporting the Independent Team and for recognising our achievements and hard work during the last four years,” she told SX.

“Our success is based on comprehensive consultation with all our communities – we consult, we listen and we respond."

The Greens were runners-up in Sydney, capturing 18 per cent of the vote. The ALP, meanwhile, drew 15 per cent – securing Meredith Burgmann a spot as a councillor – while the Liberal Party, spearheaded by openly-gay candidate Shayne Mallard, attracted 14 per cent.

Mallard told SX that he has was happy with the result, which represented a four per cent swing to the Liberals.

“I congratulate the Lord Mayor on her victory,” he said. “But I will continue to campaign very hard as a councillor for real, practical safety measures to combat violence against our community.”

“The swing of four per cent shows that my message has resonance out there,” he said.

Several other gay candidates fared well in other local government areas. As SX went to press, it was confirmed that Bruce Notley-Smith was returned as Mayor of Randwick, with Scott Bash winning a position as councillor. In North Sydney, Trent Zimmerman retained his position as representative for the Wollstonecraft ward, but narrowly lost in the mayoral race to incumbent Genia McCaffery.
