The Sydney Convicts 1 claimed victory at the 2008 Bingham Cup in Dublin, defending their 2006 title as the world champions of the international gay football tournament, on Sunday, June 15.
The Convicts 1 defeated English team Kings Cross Steelers 18 to three in the final. Convicts Captain Charlie Winn said: “I’m proud of the strength and determination shown by the boys today and in the lead-up games to the final”.
The Sydney Convicts 2 finished runners-up to the World Barbarians, an internationally mixed team, in the lower-tiered Bingham Plate Division. Captain Simon Thompson said that the team’s performance contributes to the legacy that the Convicts are helping to build in the world of gay rugby. Over 30 teams competed in this year’s contest.
