NO DYKES, THANKSkatrina3.jpg

Homosexuals should not be allowed to adopt puppies because transvestites are linked to animal pornography. At least that’s the view of a kennel owner in Sweden who refused to sell a lesbian a puppy because of her sexual preference.

This little gem came to me via an international online queer news group I subscribe to. Naturally it caught my eye, having both lesbians and puppies in the subject header. As if lesbians and puppies hadn’t been in the media enough, what with the Ellen DeGeneres fiasco a few months ago in which the comedian got into a public shitfight over a baby dog she and girlfriend Portia no longer wanted.

So, this latest incident apparently goes like this: The woman called the kennel, based in the Stockholm suburb of Värmdö, to enquire about an ad for a puppy.

She told the kennel owner (also a woman) that she liked animals and that she and her partner would have plenty of time to care for the dog since they were both students.

But when the kennel owner learned that the woman was in a same-sex relationship, she refused the sale of the puppy, apparently making reference to earlier contacts she’d had with transvestite couples, saying she’d read that TVs are connected to animal pornography and that she therefore didn’t trust homosexuals.

The lesbian reported the incident to the Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation (HomO – I’m not kidding!), which recommended the case to the courts. An appeals court confirmed an earlier district court ruling in favour of the lesbian and the kennel owner must now pay the woman 20,000 kronor ($3,500) in damages for subjecting her to discrimination and harassment as well as HomO’s approximately 45,000 kronor in legal fees.

At first glance, it’s tempting to say ‘serves her right for being a bigot’, but on closer inspection, one could argue she was trying to do the right thing by the dog.

I’ve been in Dutch sex shops which openly display bestiality magazines and videos. Perhaps the kennel owner has spotted similar items in Swedish adult premises? It only takes one sick image of a trannie or drag queen doing the dirty with a furry friend to pervert even the most liberated of minds. Plus the kennel owner was from the suburbs…

And in yet another twist of lateral thinking, I got to wondering if sometimes discrimination like this can work to our benefit. I mean, the dyke got $3,500 – that’s a lot of food, toys and bedding for a pooch that she could easily have adopted from a nice shelter (and thereby not support the practice of modern-day slavery).

It’s not a terribly politically correct argument, I know, and certainly not useful for the greater good and the acceptance of GLBTIQ people into society. But I’m planning a trip abroad later this year and a few grand could come in very handy. Wonder if Fred Nile’s got anything for sale on e-bay?
