WALK AWAY LOVERS
I was a little surprised when I picked up the phone and heard nothing but static. I then looked at the computer and we had no internet. Optus said it would be fixed ASAP but it would be no later than Tuesday. It was Saturday morning. Surprise turned to discomfort, shock and then major distress. What did we do before computers?

Sunday was the Walk for AIDS and I had a campaign on Facebook to raise as much as possible. A few weeks ago Dot baited me like a child in primary school: “I’ve got $200, what about you?” And the battle was on.

Each time I got a donation, I updated my status but Dot was still on top (and we were both determined to reign ‘Supreme Queen’). By Wednesday Morning, I was at $750 and Dot was trailing me with $500. “Victory is mine”, I texted with glee. 3media promised to round it up to $1000 if I got $800 so Portia came to the rescue (xxx) and I was the Queen. Ha ha.

By Thursday morning I had $1101 and then SX hit the streets with an article asking to support me and at that point it stopped cold. I had no computer so couldn’t log onto Facebook. I felt like I was in solitary confinement. I’d lost contact with the world. I felt empty and lost. Dot tore past me hitting $1200 then $1250 and the old mole had beaten me. It was all a bit of fun and even though Dot and I had raised $2500, the online donations struggled to reach $12000. What the fuck is wrong with our community? The same group of people volunteer, donate and support while the rest of you do sweet FA. While I was ecstatic with all the support I received, I understand how disappointing it is for HIV/AIDS organisations. We are about to commemorate World AIDS Day and the question I’m asking is, “How apathetic are you?”

I hate begging our community to wake up but we just don’t seem to hear the alarm. Please do something. It’s easy to support.

‘A tribute to Peter Allen’ is the theme for the first World AIDS Day concert and tickets are cheap at $65 with all monies going to ACON.

Book at www.ticketmaster.com.au. Do it!

Buy a ribbon, sell a ribbon. Go to www.acon.org.au or redribbonday.org.au. Do it!

Red Party @ Stonewall on Friday. Do it!

Underneath the Mirror Ball @ Arq on Sunday. Do it as well!

We have amazing people working hard to support our community. Don’t let them feel like it’s a waste of time.

Stop press. The computer is back on. I was just about to strap the parchment to the leg of my homo pigeon and send it off to Darlinghurst (and I knew it would never come back once he’d tasted that soft, rotten fruit).
