sxxx-250.gifIn both size and content, The Big Penis Book definitely lives up to its name, writes Barry Lowe.

We all knew it didn’t we? Gay dicks are bigger than straight dicks. Well, they are, according to Dr Dean Edell, who said so in 1999: “An investigation into the size of male sex organs reveals that homosexuals are generally better endowed than heterosexuals. This is a study done by the Kinsey Institute and researchers say there may be some relationship between innate sexual orientation tendencies and the size of genitalia.”

Well, not according to Dian Hanson in The Big Penis Book (Taschen, hardcover, 384 pages), a mammoth coffee table book weighing in at an equally mammoth 3.23 kilos and a whopping 12.4 x 12.1 x 1.5 inches (I always think inches sounds so much better than centimetres when you’re talking size). Not only is the book a sphincter buster, so are the appendages (400 in all) adorning the pages inside, mainly in colour but a few in black and white.

The majority of the pricks come from the 1970s before hair was depilated to death and when gay pride, the sexual revolution and the explosion of gay porn brought about by the invention of home video, freed photographers to embrace full frontal male nudity. The book includes the photos of Bob Mizer (Athletic Model Guild), David Hurles (Old Reliable), and studios such as Colt, Falcon, Sierra Domino, Third World and Champion. The models include a round-up of the usual suspects: Jeff Stryker, John Holmes, Long Dong Silver plus a pantheon of gay porn stars such as Tom Steele, Dick Fisk, the incredible Scott O’Hara, Rick Donovan, Dick Masters, Greg (ouch) Conrad, Chad Douglas, Jim Bentley, Leo Ford, Lee Rider and so many more you’ll be hurting bad by the time you get to the end.

The models range from the hairless body beautiful and the more rugged and definitely hirsute macho cowboys, to the attitudinal trailer trash straight boys. The only thing they have in common is a big dick.

But the book is more than just a perv fest, although you have to love that it wears a pair of undies. The cover is clear plastic that, once removed, reveals the eponymous love tube beneath. Not often I get to strip a book.

But, seriously, Dian Hanson has edited a number of fascinating articles (in English, French and German) beginning with her own introduction, ‘Size Matters …’, in which she extols the virtue of cock and pays lip service to small penii (yea, right, The Small Penis Book will be a runaway best seller!). Look, if you’re sensitive about your cock size then leave this book the fuck alone!

She addresses ‘The Penis in Photography’ and there’s a chapter on John Holmes, whom she credits with the largest cock known. Then she goes into various photographic studios and photographers including those mentioned above and then finally explodes the myth of Long Dong Silver. Hmmm, some myths should never be busted. There are perceptive interviews scattered throughout. In the ‘Appendicks’ there are postage stamp sized profiles of the major models from the preceding pages sometimes written by their photographers.

Hanson is a veteran of straight men’s magazine publishing and a connoisseur of the male appendage. She has also edited other titles for Taschen including The Big Book of Breasts and the Tom of Finland The Complete Kake Comics.

The Big Penis Book is available from The Bookshop Darlinghurst.
